King Charles got heartbreaking news as he prepared to begin his Christmas vacation in Sandringham, especially after his optimistic health update.
The king, who recently attended several joyful royal events, wrote an impassioned note following a terrible tragedy.
"My wife and I have been deeply saddened to learn of the magnitude of the earthquake which struck Vanuatu on Tuesday and the loss of life and property which this devastating natural disaster has left in its wake," the monarch said on Saturday.
"I am aware, from my visit to Vanuatu and Port Vila in 2018, of the extraordinary spirit of ni-Vanuatu, which has been called upon too often in recent years with repeated cyclones and, now, with this terrible earthquake," the president said.
"During this most terrible of times. I wanted you and the people of Vanuatu to know that you are remembered in our thoughts and prayers, and that we extend you all our greatest sympathies and best wishes," he signed off as "Charles R".
According to reports, a state of emergency was proclaimed in Vanuatu following a massive 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the Pacific island. So far, 12 people have been reported killed, with severe damage to water supply and cell network disruptions, among other things.
King Charles' statement comes after a source provided a health update on the monarch's cancer treatment, which will continue into the following year, according to Sky News.
According to reports, the king will continue to perform royal responsibilities as normal.
