On Wednesday, OpenAI released an official phone number for ChatGPT. People in qualified locations can phone this number to communicate with the company's chatbot vocally. People from all across the world may also store the contact and send it to the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot via WhatsApp. Currently, voice contact time is limited to 15 minutes each month, but the AI business has warned that this may alter in the future.
OpenAI now allows anyone to make phone calls to ChatGPT
In a post on X (previously known as Twitter), OpenAI unveiled the new ChatGPT phone number. The line was advertised as the vanity phone number 1-800-ChatGPT (+1-800-242-8478). Vanity phone numbers use letters from a keypad (A, B, and C represent 2; D, E, and F represent 3, and so on) to make a number distinctive. The '800' code indicates that the number is toll-free, therefore callers will not be charged. This functionality is currently only accessible in Canada and the United States.
OpenAI stated that customers will only receive 15 minutes of call time per month at the present. The corporation may, however, adjust availability and restrictions in the future. Those who live outside of the aforementioned nations can still use ChatGPT via the phone number, but only through WhatsApp.
After storing the number, WhatsApp users may send messages to ChatGPT just like they would on the official app or website. Currently, the chatbot's WhatsApp addon only allows text input and output. Other capabilities like Search, Canvas, and picture production via DALL-E will also be unavailable on WhatsApp and phone conversations.
Notably, OpenAI noted that the phone call capability does not require a smartphone and works similarly on basic phones.
OpenAI has been aggressively promoting ChatGPT as the default AI chatbot platform for users. The business has already partnered with Microsoft and Apple to provide large language models (LLMs). ChatGPT was also released for Windows and MacOS this year. The current move is presumably an attempt by the AI business to target the rural audience, who either does not have a lot of data to spend or has not yet used the chatbot.
